Climate Needs a New Plastics Economy

Climate change is a key Challenge - Plastics are a major source of Greenhouse gases

The carbon budget to limit global warning to 1,5 °C allows for 13 years of CO2 emissions. But 90% of the chemical products are derived from fossil carbon. Which amounts to 11% of global primary oil demand.


Undergoing constant growth, the production of plastics is currently 320 Mt per year worldwide. Despite environmental pressures, PET which is used in many plastic bottles and food-packaging has seen the largest increase in 10 years. 


Plastics use is growing fast because of the many benefits they deliver. Just think about food conservation.  Although  some uses of plastics need to be reconsidered,  and although biodegradable plastics should play a greater role, many high volume plastics applications will continue to require recyclable, non biodegradable plastics.

It has been known for decades that FDCA can produce PEF, a plastic substitutable for conventional plastic such as PET widely used in the bottling and packaging industries. 


However, so far, FDCA is still very difficult to produce. Until today FDCA has never been commercialized at industrial scale because it has not been possible to produce it in an economic way. FDCA nowadays is produced mainly for scientific use by specialty chemical producers. 


CLIMICALS provides a solution thanks to an innovative FDCA monomer production process using sugars as feed-stock.

Decoupling Plastics from Fossil Feed-Stocks

Our promise is to enable new high-performance plant-based plastics at the price of oil-based plastics. 


Plant-based plastics consumption has been increasing by approx. 35% per year in volume over  the last 10 years, but they represent only 2% of total production, all technologies combined.

In addition to their relatively small production capacity, plant-based plastics must be optimized to meet the challenges of use, market price or versatility of applications. The players in this market are looking for competitive, robust solutions that comply with regulations and sustainable development policies.

Our Roadmap

Scaling-up

 The mission of CLIMICALS is to develop a heterogeneous catalytic in fluidized bed process to produce FDCA and related molecules.


This technology is being developed in partnership with École Polytechnique de Montréal. 


Our roadmap covers

  • the FDCA production process itself, through a series of demos,
  • the properties of FDCA and other related products,
  • the development of market applications of FDCA, including the synthesis of PEF via the polymerization of FDCA,
  • the recyclability and biodegradability of PEF.
